avast is excellent. But there is one AV that has an intresting features set. NOD32.
From what i read, i understand that you may have an old system or limited ram and therefor your system is running slow. NOD32 is written in assembly language. It is quicker and consumes very little computer resources. Not sure if it comes with an integrated firewall though. We have used this program extensively on all our pcs in the office.

BitDefender is good for me. People only say that AVG is good is becuase they can't afford the real thing. KasperSky is also good, But if you don't want to spend a penny then Avast, AVG, and NOD32 is the way to go.
Bitdefender is about $30 and Kaspersky is about $60
You get what you pay for if you know what i mean.
