Xp support ends in 2008, and extended support ends 2014...Vista will be around longer.

Almost any hardware will work with XP...which is as stable and reliable as Microsoft gets, with Vista...you may need to buy new hardware and software

Ubuntu Linux is fast, reliable, very virus resistant (Microsoft products are virus magnets!) and it comes with the rough equivalent of photoshop, Office suite and a pile of other stuff...absolutely free..Operating system included. just google ubuntu and see.
