Why does my private network start receiving data from the server when i am not requesting it?

I seem to be recieving data from my work server whenever i access the net through browsers or p2p.

i do regular scans for virus's and malware, spyware with avg and spybot, i am cautious about installing to many antivirus software because I had a windows crash that had a message relating to that.

First thing is make sure you are only running ONE anti-virus at a time. As far as data from the server, it depends on how it is configured. If there are shared programs across the network with the server as the repository, there should be a syncronization time established for server to client else each users data will be at a different rev. level. Again, depending on setup, the windows updates may be set to push from server to client.
