Free antivirus sometimes you get what you pay for.
I personally use AVG (free.grisoft.com).
It is updated at least once a day, usually overnight.
It really depends on how careful you are, what sites you are going to, and what you are downloading. I use Firefox for the pure fact of security... Internet Explorer has Active-X controls, and many vulnerabilities in that program are taken advantage of through those Active-X controls.
AVG is the most widely-known free antivirus and they make some very good programs for purchase also.
