I have tried a variety of Anti-Virus software, and I always end up coming back to Norton Anti-Virus. Though it is far from being light on the pocket and does take up enough memory to notice, it is 10000 times better than most every free virus software you can download (some of them are actually viruses themselves) and anything is better than McAfee which takes over your PC and doesn't let you get control of it. Try uninstalling McAfee sometime... you can't do it. It's always leaving remnants behind to screw with your computer when you try installing something else. Even though it is costly, I recommend Norton Anti-Virus.

most virus are spread through IE. IE is not a safe browser. you should use a more secure browser to protect your PC from virus.

i recommand you to use firefox with Google toolbar. firefox can block any any popup and disable any virus and adware, spyware on webpage, so, firefox is much safer than IE browser. as you know, most of virus spread throught internet and webpage.

You say you found it is the threat history, in this case it may have removed it from your pc in a sort of quarantine. I would not search google, i would contact symantec if you have any further questions.

Maybe you will need to reformat your hard disk. It is difficult to erase them as describe above, so i suggest you back up your essential data then format the whole hard disk.
By default, Symantec Anitvirus would clean the virus or place the files in quarantine if it can not be cleaned. Otherwise it will prompt you.

Everything file or program with antivirus in its name closes immediately on my computer, for example, even if i call a notepad file antivirus.txt i wont be able to open it because it will just close instantly upon opening. Well, you could try renaming the antivirus program executable to something like iexplore.exe...if that doesnt work, try running a virus scan in safe mode.

The antivirus software is like a virus itself. I don't want to pay for it, so I don't renew it. It comes on every few days asking me if I want to renew. I try to uninstall it as you normally would in Add and Remove programs and it will not work. Restart your pc in safe mode by pressing f8 repetivly once you hit the start button and choose safe mode. then go to add and remove programs and remove all 3 items related to Nortons %26 Symantic then look under c:\windows\program files\ and delete and norton and or symantic folders. then reboot. and run a registry cleaner like CCLEANER

I have Norton Anti virus that cost 40 bucks it has been just fine. It updates every Friday and has blocked a lot things trying to attack my computer, I know because I check the history logs. If you have a nother name virus protector also this could be your problem, you can not run two anti virus' on a computer. They will interupt with each other and mess up a computer.

1) Trend Micro (prefered)

2) Kaspersky 6.0

3) Panda

For a free one, you need to get a combination:

2) Avast!, Zonealarm, Adaware, Spybot

Who is going to write a virus for the mac?? All it would do is disrupt elementary schools!
Why does it matter that you're going to UNCC? How does that have anything to do with your computer being at risk for viruses? Anyway, I wouldn't worry about it. Nobody writes viruses for the the mac OS. It's more trouble than it's worth, it would affect around 5% of computer users compared to the 90% of people using windows machines. If I were you, I wouldn't worry about it. You'd have to TRY to get a virus on an Apple if you were to ever be afflicted by such a thing.

Try AVG from Grisoft - I have used it for years and never had a problem. It's quick to load, runs in the background without hogging too much memory and updates regularly. For a free utility I would give it 9/10!

I have used AVG Anti Virus, Zone Alarm Firewall, Spy-bot Search and Destroy and Ad Aware both spyware killers for years. They are all free for personal use and I have had no trouble with Viruses Trojans etc. AVG does not slow the system down as much as some other products and Zone Alarm allows a lot of personal configuration unlike the Windows Firewall. I you want the best detection DONT use the free ones like the AVG and Avast supporters say to use. These free ones have limited detection. If you want complete antivirus protection then you must pay for it. I recomend you use Kaspersky Anti-virus or NOD32 are real good and rank among the top on the 100 virus bulletin. AVG and Avast do not rank very well on the virus bulletin. I had AVG and got 2 trojans then i installed Kaspersky it found them cleaned them and i havent had anymore problems since. Good luck

Yes, it is fine to buy Kaspersky online. It is not really made for newbies, there will be a bit of a learning curve, but its protection is world-class.

AVG is the favorite of noobs, the naive, the computer illiterate, and children. People of their ilk love AVG because they say it is easy to use and almost never bothers them with any pop-ups or warnings. Of course AVG Free never bothers them, it hardly ever finds any virus to warn them about!

Good protection does not come cheap and it does not come without at least a little aggrevation.

Is it a problem if Unistal Kaspersky Antivirus license expired?

My license has expired. Only effect of that seems to be the message that the current anti-virus database was released 91 days ago and that a valid antivirus database is required for the application to work efficiently. I'm still able to perform scans and protection still seems to be enabled. So what's the problem if I don't renew my license? I just don't know what an antivirus database means and it doesn't tell the consequence of not having an older database.

I'm only bothered because my C: shows only 130 MB disk space no matter how many huge files delete permanently. A thought occured in my mind that may be after the license expiry the Antivirus software is not working correctly let alone efficiently.

To be protected against them, you must renew your license to get the virus database that contains their signature, or if they infect your computer, you will not be in the slightest protected. Yes, you can still scan, and the realtime is still on, but it's pretty much useless. If you are not prepared to pay, then uninstall Kaspersky and go to http://www.free-av.com/ and download the free Avira AntiVir Classic.

Well, here's how it goes: My comp. has this annoying virus that spreads via Windows Live Messenger by fabricating a file transfer request and, upon accepting that request, you've contracted the virus. I don't know if it's dangerous or anything, but it's VERY annoying and my avast! 4 Home Edition FREE won't pick it up. My friend suggests PC Tools AntiVirus... I've heard good things about avast! and I don't wanna be so quick to uninstall it. Probably the antivirus software, has a firewall implemented, i advise you to go to options and see if there is a firewall, if that's the case then add the limewire as an allowed product to use internet, in the firewall options. That's the problem i think, cause the antivirus cannot do anything, it only scans for viruses or malicious software..

AVG is a good anti-virus software but it is not great. However since AVG is free you have nothing to lose. I personally think Avast is a better choice for free anti-virus software.

I think you should try both of them and see which one you like the best. Just make sure to uninstall your current anti-virus program before installing another. You should never have 2 anti-virus programs installed at the same time.

What you have is a EULA for up to 3 computers. You can use it for 3 years in one computer, but after 1 year you will no longer be eligible for updates or upgrades. If you have to reformat your hard drive, you will have to reinstall the software. When you re-register it, if you use the same email address it will pick up on that. If you use a different email address, more than likely it will be treated as a new install and will allow you one year of upgrades and updates. Hope this helps.

I have just upgraded my antivirus software (mcafee total plus), and when installing, it is telling me that i need to remove/uninstall 'ca etrust antivirus' otherwise i won't be able to have spam protection, anti virus or privacy. I believe the best package for Vista is the Trend Micro Pro suite or in the very least their combo antivirus/antispyware package. The pro suite adds the firewall. I am using it right now on a brand new Vista Home Premium notebook.

You can also look over Webroot suite with Spysweeper, Sophos antivirus (VB100 winner) and firewall. Webroot is a smacking $40 US. The firewall gets a little slammed..... look around for more reviews on it.

you have to buy another Disk , u cant use the same CD 2 install the OS in other comp. theres only one way to purchase new activation codes from Microsoft they'll only gave you activation codes for 4 computers.

I think microsoft expect you to license (buy a copy) of their so called operating system for each each PC. Why not use linux, that way you will not need licenses (or anti virus)
Unless you have an OEM license agreement, you have to buy each time or the owner will run into registration problems and you don't need that kind of feedback. I highly recommend AVG free or Avast if for an individual. If they are for a business, look into the PC-cillin for good products scalable to the users needs and great support at a very reasonable price.

I think the program that has caught the most worms and such for me is a-squared. Avira's also caught a few, although some people might find the nag screens whenever the program automatically updates annoying.

i would go with AVG just because it is free and does just as good of a job as the two you have - but if i had to choose between those two it would have to be mcafee because norton will slow down your computer more. If AVG is not enough (for most people that is more then enough) then you can also get zone alarm (free) which will basically just put another wall between you and the ouside world but with the added bonus of asking you everytime if it should launch a program.

It is very good, companies that send a lot of email don't want viruses in their system. Yahoo has a good one. I don't think you need any more. Don't open attachments from people that you don't know, and if you do open them, just look, make sure you aren't running a program.

Yes use an AV, AVG grisoft is good, but n Anti Virus is only as good as the most recentg update, and the update comes after the virus has been launched, so the backup is the only sure and proven method for data saftey and failure of loss.
an external firewall would help but wouldnt help you for downloaded viruses streamed via browsers. I recommend using Ad aware se personal for spyware and scanning for viruses with norton antivirus. and remember to set restore dates frequently.

I have researched all anti-virus products and the best anti-virus protection is Kaspersky. Kaspersky is the best all-round anti-virus program. NOD32 is just as good if not better, it runs faster and has less software conflicts but may be more difficult to use. Personally, I use NOD32.

Recent tests prove Kaspersky and NOD32 are better than the best sellers Norton and McAfee (av-comparatives.org). Norton is notoriously bloated and takes forever to perform full systems scans.

Trend Micro Antivirus is a viable alternative if you're having a lot of trouble with software conflicts. Trend Micro rounds out the top three. BitDefender is very good as well, but gives a high number of false alarms.

I had simillar issue.. Only solution try Macfree or Norton antivirus.. They should be able to remove it.. Else you will need a clean installation of windows again.. This will be much safer on longer run
be carefule where you download from some sites are not very nice, so you have a trojan, I would get someone to remove it for you or you can reformat you hard drive and reinstall you OS as the safest option, and think about some protective software like a firewall, antispyware and antivirus, I am not a fan of freeware so I purchased mine, and yes I use Nortons and my pc runs fine othe ppl say nortons slows you down, prove it to me and i believe.

I don't know much about either, but I do know McAfee really messed up our computer. My dad hates it, and he loves computer stuff, so I asume he knows what he's talking about. He does like Norton.
norton is not only an anti virus..you can have norton ghost, disk doctor etc..compare to mcafee which is only a anti virus..
They are both generally the same program, except for the way Norton AntiVirus is much easier to update.
Mcafee is much better than norton antivirus.Mcafee does not gets currpt and on the other hand norton gets currpetd most of times but norton updates are much easier.

I have said it a million times in here... and laugh every time I hear AVG is the best. The answer is Avast! http://www.avast.com. remember that you also need anti-spyware. Go with spybot search and destroy and make sure you install and run tea timer with it. Tea Timer will block changes to the system registry and ask if you want to accept or deny these changes. If you think you have a virus or spyware on your computer already, you can try and run Hitman Pro. Make sure that when you run anti-virus and spyware scans that it is done in safe mode. Also, make sure from time to time to have Avast! run a boot time scan.

No. There's a reason they are free. A lot of people will tell you about AVG and Avast, but they are not as good as people will tell you. No antivirus is fool-proof, but the better one's provide updates faster. Go to Wal-Mart and spend $19.99 on McAfee and save yourself the headache.

You didn't say what system you are running, but if u go to control panel and click add or remove programs you can go down the list and it will tell you all the programs you have installed. It should have norton or mcAfee in the list. There is also a possibility that the program has expired if you are not getting updates when you go on the internet. If that is the problem you can download one with a trial off the internet, and I suggest purchasing McAfee suite 2006 it is the best updated for viruses.
