Excuse me, you want to stick an incompatible software antivirus software onto a Windows operating system which you are then going to connect to the internet? Please excuse my ignorance on matters of IT, but I think you are asking for trouble.
Why not follow the manufacturer's recommendations (if they say it isn't compatible, then why not believe them) and use the antivirus software they say will work on Vista. If they don't make one, then that is their problem, return the product to the retailer and get a version which is certified to work.
